Our MissionCrispy chicken wontons. Tomato and beef casserole with polenta crust. BBQ bourbon braised meatballs. What if you could indulge in these dishes in a way that was not only better for your body, but better for the world we live in?
At The Abbot’s Butcher, we want to create a new conversation around plant-based eating that’s all about accessibility and fun. Because we want to celebrate and empower everyone, whether you’re a dedicated vegan or simply interested in incorporating some plant-based meals into your week.
Our plant-based meats are the modern-day essentials that make plant-based cooking delicious and intuitive. Use them as the backbone to your favorite recipes, or try your hand at something new and exciting. Because what you’ll find is that our meats are not only delectable and satisfying – they’re the perfect reason to get into the kitchen and cook up some delicious food that everyone will love.
I made the decision to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle in college. I had been fortunate enough to study under Professor Peter Singer, whose book Animal Liberation had awakened something latent inside me. I had always been a proponent of animals right – but this was the first time I realized that my own actions were contradicting my core beliefs. But it took nearly a decade longer for me to switch to a completely vegan lifestyle. Why? I asked myself that a lot. But I’ve come to understand that every single one of us is on our own journey. And showing compassion to everyone for where they are is part of the plant-based lifestyle.
At this point, I had been meat-free for quite a while. I started a vegan blog. I was cooking feverishly – trying to create recipes that would help show my friends and family that plant-based eating was not as daunting as they were convinced (though some hemp patties I had made didn’t exactly help my plight).
Yet I kept running into the same problems. The black bean and quinoa burgers left us all longing for more. And of the meat alternatives that were available, I couldn’t find one that satisfied, nor one where I could recognize the ingredients that went into it. And coming from a family of physicians – a clean label was always at the forefront of my mind.
So I set out to create something new. Something that had the taste and texture of animal-based proteins. Something with a clean label. Something that made plant-based eating simple and accessible to everyone.
I spent an entire year at the farmer’s markets. Every weekend, with small batch creations, engaging with customers, and really listening to what people wanted. And after endless hours in the kitchen, countless recipe rewrites and invaluable feedback – The Abbot’s Butcher was born.
We have a ground “beef” that has an earthy, umami flavor. We have a ground “chicken” that is light and versatile. And we have delectable, fresh meatballs that are based off a decades-old recipe from my partner’s Italian grandmother.
Everything is fresh – ready for you to sizzle and sauté to perfection. There is more protein per ounce than animal-based meats. And we never use any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Because plant-based eating shouldn’t be about reduction, restriction or sacrifice. In fact, it’s just the opposite. And with The Abbot’s Butcher plant-based meats, everyone can enjoy their favorite foods – while still living in a way that celebrates their bodies and the beautiful world we live in.
I hope you enjoy. This is my mission. Good food that is good for your body and good for the world we live in. And I’m happy to say that since I launched The Abbot’s Butcher, my friends and family have shifted closer and closer to a completely vegan lifestyle. Just working on my mom to adopt more plant-based cheese!
Until then – let’s all show compassion for everyone, no matter where they are along their journey. And continue to celebrate every time someone chooses the plant-based option. Because when we all make the right decisions, we can start to cultivate something better, together.

IS YOUR “MEAT” NON-GMO?
This is a priority for us, which is why we pledge to you that every single ingredient that we use in our artisan plant-based meats is non-GMO. This includes our soy beans, which are identity preserved and non-GMO. This means that the seed that was planted for the plants that yield the grain originated from a non-GMO source. Our source works closely with their farmers and suppliers to ensure that the ingredients are non-GMO, and has implemented state-of-the-art testing equipment that allows for in-house testing.
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE GLUTEN-FREE?
Our Spanish “Chorizo,” Ground “Chicken” and Ground “Beef” are all gluten-free and wheat-free.
HOW LONG DO YOUR PRODUCTS LAST IN THE REFRIGERATOR?
Everything from our kitchen is small batch made from scratch, and vacuum-sealed so it can stay fresh. The “best by” date is printed on the package, and generally falls around 8 weeks from packaging date. If you open the package, just be sure to use within a week for optimal freshness.
CAN I FREEZE THE MEAT?
Sure! If you only use a portion of the meats, and want to save the rest, just place in a freezer-safe bag and freeze. The meats can be frozen for up to 9 months. Then, when you are ready to enjoy, just place the meats back in the refrigerator and allow to thaw before using.
WHERE DID YOU GET THE NAME “THE ABBOT’S BUTCHER”?
I spent a very special part of my life living on Abbot Kinney in Venice, so there is an emotional sentiment here. And Abbot Kinney himself was actually a conservationist, which goes hand in hand with part of the mission of this company – to create a sustainable meat company that can help us grow a little closer to the kind of world we all want to live in.
